BitHub.Africa was a Pan-African Web3 community dedicated to accelerating the adoption of blockchain, AI, IoT and proof-of-work cryptocurrency protocols across African communities worldwide. It operated under the umbrella of the wider Melanin brand and was integral to the Melanin Academy programme.
Through community-based initiatives, BitHub trained blockchain engineers to design and implement distributed computing solutions, among them Melanin Solar, aimed at challenges facing African people globally.
Founded in December 2015 by John Wainaina Karanja and Christian Kakoba Mugisho, BitHub.Africa began operations on 6 January 2016 and ran for ten years, closing on 6 January 2026. Over that decade it became a driving force in making blockchain technology a practical tool for the continent.
